Premier’s principal long-term customer is Western Power, Western Australia’s major supplier of electricity. The Company’s coal is also supplied to Iluka Resources, Worsley Alumina, Loongana Lime, Cable Sands and a number of nurseries.

Premier Coal has always had one major customer, the State’s electricity commission, now known as Western Power, which owns about 60% of electricity generation capacity in WA. Western Power take 91% (3 million tonnes) of Premier’s production. Our coal is used to power the South West Interconnected System (SWIS) supplying the south-west corner of the State and as far away as Kalbarri and Kalgoorlie.

Premier Coal is the sole supplier of the new Collie A power station (1-1.2 million tonnes per year) and also supplies nearly 2 million tonnes to Muja Power Station. Both of these are serviced by a conveyor from the mine site.

Premier’s coal has been used since 1984 at the Worsley Alumina Refinery near Collie. Here again it is used for power generation in a cogeneration system that uses excess heat-steam in the refinery process. Worsley Alumina uses approximately 200,000 tonnes of Premier coal per year.

Iluka Resources has a major minerals sands mining and processing operation near Capel on the south-west coast of WA. Premier Coal has a contract to supply Iluka 185,000 tonnes per year of nut coal (22-85mm) as a reductant for the production of synthetic rutile from ilmenite.

Loongana Lime, based just east of Kalgoorlie WA, uses 8,000 tonnes of our coal per year in a fluidised bed kiln for lime production.

Cable Sands uses 7,000 tonnes per year as a heat source for drying concentrates.

Other minor uses of Premier’s coal are nurseries and steam trains eg at Whiteman’s Park, which is supplied free as a community service.
