Western Australian electricity - fundamental to the State's economy and wellbeing - is fuelled by natural gas (54%), coal (42%), fuel oil or diesel (3%) and renewable resources (0.4%).

Sustainable energy will remain dependent on fossil fuels for many years to come as new and existing power technologies rapidly move towards low or zero greenhouse gas emissions.

A vital part of the WA economy and social fabric, Collie coal will continue to underpin the State’s power network for many decades. WA is fortunate to have a wealth of accessible energy reserves in the Collie region and the North West Shelf natural gas fields.

As technology advances, it will become practical and economic to develop more renewable energy sources.

The reliability and efficiency of WA energy and power industries depends upon a balanced use of coal, gas and renewables.
