Premier Coal is a signatory to the Australian Greenhouse Challenge and has a Cooperative Agreement to 2005. Premier has reduced greenhouse emissions per unit production by 50% since 1994.

Greenhouse performance at the Premier Mine is a function of emissions from energy used in mining, coal processing and transport, and a contribution from spontaneous combustion. Unlike many coals, Collie coal has no associated methane, a major bonus.

Most of our greenhouse emissions are from the use of fuels producing carbon dioxide. Percentage contributions to June 2003 were as follows:

  • Diesel 61.9%
  • Electricity 34.0%
  • LPG 0.3%
  • Explosives 0.5%
  • Spontaneous Combustion 3.1%
  • Petrol 0.2%

Since 1994, Premier Coal has reduced unit emissions by 50% through a variety of initiatives including energy audits, changed mining practices and equipment, reduced haulage distances, higher efficiency motors, lighting control systems and sequestration.

Premier Coal has also established Eucalypt plantations on all available private property that it has purchased in association with the mining operation.

Premier Coal is a signatory to the Australian Greenhouse Challenge with a program to reduce emissions by a further 18% by 2005.

Recent initiatives for this Challenge include:
  • Truck tray lining to reduce carry back;
  • Use of computer-based truck dispatch to optimise fleet movements;
  • Lighting control systems in the Maintenance Workshop;
  • Fuel additives;
  • Fuel monitoring system; and
  • Greater focus on spontaneous combustion controls.
