The Premier mine is located
in the south-west of Western Australia, about 200 km by road,
south of Perth. At 10 km east of Collie, the mine is mid way
between the Muja and Collie Power Stations and within 30 km
of the Worsley Alumina Refinery. The mine is 70 km by road or
rail from the port of Bunbury.
Collie is ideally situated in the unique jarrah forests of WA
in an area containing two major dams. The region has been a
centre for the timber industry for over 100 years and also services
a significant farming area, now diversifying into viticulture
and aquaculture. A rich mineral heritage also occurs in the
south-west region with mining activities including bauxite,
gold, tin, tantalum, lithium and mineral sands. Collie coal
is well placed as an energy or reductant source for these operations.
The Collie region is very picturesque and is now a popular tourist
destination. The industrial activities of mining and power generation
have long been a popular tourist attraction. Development of
Premier's obsolete mining areas into recreation areas is set
to greatly enhance tourism in the region. The 5B lakes area
(for aquatic sports and accommodation) and Western 2 development
(a motor sports and driver training complex) are major rehabilitation
initiatives to provide community assets after mining.
